Scope of activities

The vascular surgery department is for patients who do not require acute care.

The primary focus of the department is to diagnose and effectively treat vascular diseases, to monitor the course of the diseases and to avoid complications. Risk assessment and healthy lifestyle education are important aspects of disease prevention.

We welcome patients with arterial and venous diseases or complaints, as well as those in high-risk groups who priorities prevention. Preventive screenings allow at-risk individuals to avoid transitioning into the patient group.

Risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol levels, a family history of vascular disease, certain haematological diseases and smoking warrant screening even in the abscence of symptoms. Early treatment and regular monitoring are essential.

Screening, diagnosis, treatment and care of blood vessel diseases

After consultation and physical examination of the patient, a Doppler examination is performed in case of lower limb complaints or an unpalpable pulse. We determine the Doppler index, which is the ratio of the blood pressures in the legs and arms and provides important information about the circulation in the extremities. By measuring the peripheral arterial blood flow, it is possible to determine whether further investigation is needed or whether medication, with regular monitoring, can halt the progression of the disease.

Screening, diagnosis, treatment and care of varicose vein diseases

Varicose vein complaints can be caused by dilated veins and malfunctioning venous valves.

For venous disorders, an examination at our department is usually sufficient to establish an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. Treatment recommendations may include:

  • wearing compression bandages or appropriately graded compression stockings;
  • medications to support vein health, reduce swelling, and alleviate inflammation;
  • lifestyle changes.

The depratment also assesses and provides recommendations for surgical interventions if necessary.

Note that the department does not have the capacity to reliably confirm or rule out deep vein thrombosis (DVT). For suspected cases, patients should be immediately transported to an emergency facility for urgent care in accordance with professional protocols.
